December is National Mutt Month. We can celebrate this by not only looking at the pure bred dogs and puppies, but giving the mixed breeds (mutts) a chance. Many dogs and puppies are combinations of some really nice breeds and can offer love and comfort just like the pure bred ones. Of course they won’t compete in dog shows or will be used for breeding, but they deserve a chance too. Just look at them as if they are "designer breeds" , a mixture of breeds bred for being cute, lovable and part of a family. Many "mutts" are an eclectic mixture of breeds. This shouldn’t make them less lovable, trainable, or adoptable.

Myths about behavior issues in dogs

I’m embarrassed to talk to my vet about my dog’s behavior. I’m afraid that I’m the cause of the problem.

: Don’t hesitate to ask you veterinarian about any problem that may affect your pet’s health and well being. Most behavior problems are at least manageable.

Puppies shouldn’t go to puppy classes until they have had all of their shots or they will get sick.

: Properly early socialization can save a dog’s life and is the best way to ensure that you end up with a pet that is well adjusted and a joy to live with for many years.

My dog is aggressive/fearful/shy because he/she was abused as a puppy.

: No matter the cause, dogs that exhibit fearful or anxious behavior frequently may be suffering and should be evaluated by a veterinarian. These animals can be helped in many different ways.
